17 DIONYSIOU AREOPAGITOU STREET BUILDING sign now

We, the undersigned, oppose to the demolition of the building of
17 Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, Athens, Greece for the following reasons:

-The building is Listed, being one of the very few samples of the Art Deco movement in Athens' architectural landscape.

-There are no practical problems created in association with the functioning of the New Acropolis Museum,and in any case the museum was designed and constructed taking into consideration the existing urban network and especially the listed buildings, which is obvious from publications as well as the design of the museum itself, and the competition terms.

-The support for our campaign has been expressed by perstigious national and international organizations and internationally recognized personalities of the arts and culture as well as other fields, (architects, archaeologists, writers, academics). http://areopagitou17.blogspot.com/

-The decision of the Ministry of Culture to disqualify the building as a Work of Art with the sole purpose of demolition and without objective arguments, lead 341 of its employees to strongly oppose the decision of the Ministry by which they are employed. This was expressed in a decisive letter posted on the 14th of November 2007.

-Over 8500 citizens and visitors have signed the petition books at the entrance of the building during the last 2 months,most of them accompanied by comments of anger and rage towards any intention of destroying the building, and many of them expressing shame about being the citizen of a country that doesnt respect its own cultural identity.
